Summary of hands-on supermicrosurgery course and live surgeries at 8th world symposium for lymphedema surgery.
2019
The hands-on supermicrosurgery course provided participants a valuable learning experience of in-depth practices of supermicrosurgical skills with experts. Seven live surgeries were successfully demonstrated at 8th World Symposium for Lymphedema Surgery. Variable donor sites for vascularized lymph node transfer were the submental, supraclavicular, groin, and omental; while the recipient sites included the wrist and axilla in upper limb; and popliteal and groin in the lower limb. The therapeutic and preventive lymphovenous anastomosis was also satisfactorily performed.
Multimodal data as a means to understand the learning experience
2019
Most work in the design of learning technology uses click-streams as their primary data source for modelling & predicting learning behaviour. In this paper we set out to quantify what, if any, advantages do physiological sensing techniques provide for the design of learning technologies. We conducted a lab study with 251 game sessions and 17 users focusing on skill development (i.e., user's ability to master complex tasks). We collected click-stream data, as well as eye-tracking, electroencephalography (EEG), video, and wristband data during the experiment. Our analysis shows that traditional click-stream models achieve 39% error rate in predicting learning performance (and 18% when we perf…
Contemporary Art as a Learning Experience
2012
Abstract Art has changed a lot during the last fifty years. In spite of that, the role of art in schools has remained the same. The aim of this paper is to show the many different ways contemporary art offers itself as an environment for learning. An idea of contemporary art as a learning experience presented here is based on teacher's views on the matter. The analysis of the material shows that by concretizing the properties of artworks and the experience produced by them, arguments for seeing contemporary art both as a credible and a necessary environment of learning can be found.
Spaanse kinderen. Los niños españoles exiliados en Bélgica durante la guerra civil. Experiencia pedagógica e historias de vida
2013
This paper explains the pedagogical experience conducted during 2011-2012 by the author at the Ghent University (Belgium), in which he tried to recover the historical memory through oral history teaching. The search and document analysis in Belgian correspondence files, photographs and drawings, and the use of interviews and life stories of «children» exiled in Ghent during the Spanish Civil War, are the sources used for the study of these childhood stories. This is a historical research shared with students of Pedagogische Wetenschappen (Educational Sciences) that became a real learning experience of historical and educational learning. El presente artículo narra la experiencia pedagógica …
A critical view to current economic topics through an Online-Forum activity
2018
[EN] In order to address the critical thinking and the knowledge of contemporary problems an online forum activity is proposed in this paper. The activity was applied within the World Economy subject in the degree of Business Administration. The main aim of this teaching proposal is to discuss some current issues and events in the international economic context which likely are not addressed in the syllabus. Through an online forum both teacher and pupils posted comments about some relevant topics related with the subject content. Students have the opportunity to express their own opinion and provide additional information and resources such as news links, documentaries, Youtube videos and…
WRITTEN REFLECTION AS A “MOVEMENT” IN A QUALITY SERVICE-LEARNING PROCESS
2023
Nowadays, Service Learning (SL) is considered as a form of experiential education. This perspective is based on the recognition and enhancement of experience as an ordering criterion of teaching and learning methods. In these terms, learning offers students the opportunity to experience a deeper understanding of personal competences. Thus, the central element of the SL is the link between personal and interpersonal development with cognitive development and the curricular path. Investing in authentic conditions of subjectivity and consequently promoting the production of significant knowledge towards research parameters encompass the possibility of collaborating and interacting with a plura…
Mathematics textbooks, opportunity to learn and student achievement
2005
Abstract Opportunity to learn is considered an important contributing factor in learning outcomes. In some of the latest international comparative studies of mathematics achievement, such as SIMS and TIMSS, painstaking efforts have been made to find out what the participating students' opportunities to learn mathematics had been. However, there have been problems with relating the findings to student outcomes. This article approaches opportunity to learn in three different ways. Among these approaches, an item-based analysis of textbook contents resulted in fairly high correlations with student performance at the item level in TIMSS 1999. This implies that even a quite simple analysis of te…

PARSI
2012
A usual target of automatic assessment in CS education has been a computer program or some other software engineering product. In this paper, we describe the 'PARSI' tool that is used for the automatic assessment of stylistic and technical correctness of office documents and some basic IT skills such as email netiquette and email lists usage. The PARSI tool enables us to run a highly populated course with only one teacher, and investigate how we could make such a course a flexible learning experience where learners take an active role.
